“It’s a journey that no one really signs up for! My ‘journey’ started when I was 12 years old.”

Lee-Ann, now mother to a daughter who is her daily inspiration and wife to a very supportive husband, lives in the coastal town of Yeppoon, Queensland. She holds qualifications in Modern Psychology including Hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy, Counselling, Coaching, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Laughter Yoga, Human Resources and Business. Lee-Ann is an Emotional Fitness Coach and an advocate for self-love at The Happiness Prescription.

Lee-Ann never thought her life would be changed at such a young age. She was first diagnosed with melanoma at just 12 years old when a mole removed from her left shoulder came back from pathology as malignant melanoma. When she was 16, melanoma was discovered in one of her lymph nodes, then two years later another primary melanoma was removed. She has so far had six primary and one secondary melanoma removed.

“There are days when the weight of this disease becomes overbearing, with the restrictions about enjoying the outdoors, the regular skin checks, the subsequent removal of lesions ‘just in case’ they might be a melanoma,” Lee-Ann said. “And of course there is that dreadful feeling of waiting for pathology results to come in and then having to deal with surgery when the results aren’t good. But most of all, I hate the impact it has on my family.”

“Living with melanoma can be a lonely experience, however, I believe if we unite together, we are stronger, more supported and most of all, happier. It tends to dominate your life and you can think that everyone knows about the disease and how to prevent it … sadly that’s not true.”

Lee-Ann is motivated to be part of the Speakers’ Hub to share her story so others are aware of the dangers of sun exposure, skin cancer and melanoma, as well as how it can affect your life.

“I will never give in to melanoma, I will continue to believe in my optimal health, the expertise of my doctors and the research being conducted for treatments,” said Lee-Ann.
