Leon Burgess is a Biobank Technical Officer at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA). Read his answers to ‘Research Life’ below where he dives into career highlights, what he loves about his work, his favourite quote and more.

Tell us about your latest work.

As the Biobank Technical Officer, my primary role is to support the processing, retrieval, dissemination, and tracking of patient samples that are used in groundbreaking research into melanoma and other skin cancers. Melanoma Institute Australia’s Biobank proudly houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of melanoma biospecimens in the world, and it’s an enormous privilege to be part of the team responsible for maintaining and managing this vital resource!

How did you get into the melanoma research field?

After completing my Honours year, I was unsure about my next steps but knew that I wanted to pursue a career with positive societal impact. When the opportunity to work in MIA’s Biobank came up, I immediately and enthusiastically applied. Being part of an organisation that’s actively improving outcomes for others has given me a strong sense of purpose and direction, and I’m proud to be making a meaningful contribution to melanoma research.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career so far has been supporting medical professionals and researchers in their investigations through this present role. Knowing that the work I do helps enable important discoveries and advancements is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to contribute, even behind the scenes, to work that has the potential to improve patient outcomes and revolutionise the standard of care that patients receive.

What is your favourite part of your work?

My favourite part of my work is the meaningful connection it has with our patients. Although I don’t personally interact with them, throughout my work I’m reminded of the challenges that patients, their families, and their friends face. It’s an honour to help realise the value of their stories by helping enable research that directly affects them.

Tenacious.

I can cook a delicious vegan ragu.

‘Dark’ by Baran bo Odar & Janjtje Friese. It’s basically Stanger Things but German.

What is a book you’ve enjoyed recently?

‘The Plague’ by Albert Camus – a fictional tale about a city in Algeria that is hit by an epidemic.
