The MIA team has shone on the world stage at The Society for Melanoma Research 2023 Congress (SMR23) held in Philadelphia.
SMR23
The Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) is a group of global scientists working to find the mechanisms responsible for melanoma and, consequently, new therapies for this cancer. SMR contributes to advances in melanoma research by bringing together researchers in a non-competitive way to unite the scientific community.
Professor Georgina Long AO delivered the keynote address on progress and future prospects for curing melanoma.
Assoc Professor Matt Carlino presented the latest research on uveal melanoma, and Dr Tuba Gide delivered an address focussed on immunotherapy response predictors.
In recognition of his incredible contribution to melanoma research, Prof Richard Scolyer was presented with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 SMR Congress in Philadelphia.
SMR presents a number of awards annually, including the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed to an individual who has made major and impactful contributions to melanoma research throughout their career.
Prof Richard Scolyer was presented with the award by SMR President Mike Davies and received a standing ovation.
“I accept the award on behalf of the amazing team Prof Georgina Long & I lead at Melanoma Institute Australia. So proud of its incredible work!” – Prof Richard Scolyer
Whilst at SMR23 Prof Scolyer presented his personal glioblastoma story, including Prof Georgina Long’s melanoma-inspired novel immune-based treatment strategy and the exciting scientific data generated so far.
Just after SMR23 the 2-day Global Melanoma Coalition Conference was held in Philadelphia. It was a hybrid meeting and a wonderful opportunity for global melanoma advocates from Australia, USA, Canada, Italy, Armenia, UK, New Zealand and Ireland to support, share and inspire each other.
Latest treatment updates were discussed, as well as member presentations of advocacy initiatives. MIA’s Di Mason presented MIA initiatives, including the upcoming launch of our Sun Safety in Sport initiative with the Australian Institute of Sport.
