Amazing initiatives organised by our wonderful community not only raise critical funds for research, but also generate life-saving awareness. Thank you to our fundraisers and all their supporters, helping to take us one step closer to zero deaths from melanoma.
One Man, Three Horses, and a Trail of Love: Col Rathbone’s Ride for Melanoma
In the face of profound loss, some find solace in action. Col Rathbone, a 76-year-old from Kiama, transformed his grief into a mission: to traverse the 5,330 km Bicentennial National Trail on horseback, raising funds for melanoma research in memory of his beloved wife, Veronica—affectionately known as Roni. Roni’s battle with melanoma began with an unusual spot beneath her toenail, initially misdiagnosed and eventually leading to a decade-long remission. Tragically, the cancer returned and claimed her life in 2020.
Inspired by a dream he harboured since 1988, Col embarked on his journey in January 2023, accompanied by his three trusted horses. Starting from Gunning, he made his way to Healesville before heading north, embracing the challenges of the trail with determination and resilience. Throughout his expedition, Col faced diverse terrains and weather conditions, relying on the kindness of communities and the strength of his equine companions. His journey was not just a physical endeavor but a tribute to Roni and a beacon of hope for melanoma research.
After covering over 2,000 km, Col made the difficult decision to conclude his ride due to health considerations. His efforts have raised over $30,000 for the Melanoma Institute Australia, contributing significantly to the fight against this formidable disease
Col’s journey exemplifies the power of love, determination, and community. His story continues to inspire, reminding us all that even in the face of adversity, one person’s dedication can make a profound difference.

In Honour of Jenny George
In February this year, the Northbridge Golf Club once again rallied behind an incredible cause – raising $150,000 in honour of the late Jenny George. Combined with the remarkable $350,000 raised at the inaugural event in 2024, over $500,000 has now been contributed to melanoma research in Jenny’s name. These funds have established a three-year fellowship focused on immunotherapy. This ground-breaking treatment has transformed the outlook for advanced melanoma patients and is now paving the way for even broader cancer research innovation.
Jenny was inspired by this work and determined to make a difference. Though she is no longer with us, her vision and generosity live on through this fellowship – supporting vital research that will save lives and change futures.
To Jenny’s family, friends, and the Northbridge community – thank you. Your extraordinary efforts are creating lasting impact and helping us edge closer to a melanoma-free future.

KangaNews
A huge thank you to KangaNews!
Over the past two years, KangaNews has chosen to support Melanoma Institute Australia at two amazing events KangaNews Awards Gala Dinners 2024 and 2025 —raising an incredible total of $80,000 to help us continue our life-saving work.
At each event, we were proud to have our MIA faculty member and Cancer Cell Biologist, Professor Helen Rizos, share insights into the world-class research we’re undertaking—particularly in immunotherapy, which is not only transforming melanoma treatment but also impacting other cancers.
We’re so grateful to Kanga News, and all who supported at the events.

The Hills Wellness Expo 2025
The Hills Wellness Expo 2025 brought the community together in the spirit of healing, connection, and education. This beautiful event was originally the passion project of Rachel Aldridge — a dedicated naturopath, mother, and founder of In Nature’s Hands — whose vision was to showcase the incredible wellness practitioners of the Hills District and give back through knowledge and support.
Tragically, Rachel passed away in August 2023 after a short and brave battle with melanoma. Her loss was deeply felt, but her legacy continues to shine through the Expo, which now stands as a tribute to her passion and generosity.
We’re incredibly grateful to the Expo team for choosing to support Melanoma Institute Australia in her honour. Thanks to generous donations and raffle proceeds, over $5,000 was raised to help us fund vital research, education and clinical care — work that helps us edge closer to a melanoma-free future.
A special thank you to Rachael Horne, one of our amazing Speakers’ Hub volunteers, who bravely shared her own personal experience with melanoma at the event — turning her story into powerful awareness.

Gav Klein’s 54th Birthday Celebration
When Gav turned 54, he decided to celebrate in the most generous way—by turning his birthday bash into a fundraiser for Melanoma Institute Australia. Originally planned for March, the celebration was postponed due to the cyclone, but that didn’t dampen his spirits one bit. When the big night finally rolled around, Gav swapped birthday presents for purpose, asking friends and family to donate to MIA instead.
With a glittering disco theme and a dance floor that didn’t stop spinning until 3am, it was a night to remember—full of fun, friendship, and fundraising!
We’re so grateful to Gav for his incredible generosity and for choosing to support MIA in such a thoughtful way. Fundraisers like his not only raise vital funds for our work, but also shine a light on the power of community coming together to make a difference.
Thank you, Gav—you’re a true disco (and fundraising) legend!
