We were delighted to have the honour of meeting with His Majesty King Charles III this week, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shine an international spotlight on melanoma.
We were proud to share with His Majesty King Charles III Melanoma Institute Australia’s world leading advances in melanoma early detection, diagnosis, and treatment, which are saving lives.
This includes the use of immunotherapy, developed in melanoma and which is now also benefiting other cancers.
But prevention is always better than a cure. We presented His Majesty with an Akubra hat for The King and The Queen, and his visit amplified critical melanoma prevention messages about sun safety.
“On behalf of the Melanoma Institute Australia team, I would like to express our immense pride following The King’s visit to The Poche Centre this week. His Majesty was most gracious with his time, and it was wonderfully heartwarming to see him interact with so many of us.
Prof Georgina Long AO, Prof Richard Scolyer AO and Assoc Prof Linda Martin were brilliant in explaining the expert work undertaken at MIA. Maria Gonzalez, MIA Director of Clinical Care, ‘received’ the King on behalf of nurses and our clinical care as he entered the building. Maria was joined at reception by Reg Richardson (MIA’s inaugural chair) and James Economides (Co-founder of Melanoma March). The King was so engaged with Georgina’s patient, Adam Brown, and his beautiful family and the success of his treatment journey.
The King’s high-profile visit, which raised awareness of melanoma, crucial prevention and early detection messaging, and our life-saving treatment advances, will have a great impact on our goal of reaching zero deaths from melanoma.
Simply put, we are immensely grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity.” – Matthew Browne, CEO Melanoma Institute Australia
