Congratulations to MIA Co-Medical Directors, Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO, jointly named 2024 NSW Australian of the Year.
This award is testament to their global leadership in transforming melanoma, Australia’s national cancer, into a largely curable disease and saving many thousands of lives, and their intellect and dedication in applying melanoma science to develop world-first treatments for Richard’s brain cancer.
Our congratulations also to all other NSW Australians of the Year and to all nominees, what a remarkable and inspirational group of Australians, all making an amazing contribution in their respective fields.
We are so proud!

Congratulations to Professors Georgina and Richard for being recognised as NSW Australians of the Year for 2024. I myself have benefited from the lifesaving treatments that they have worked on. Diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma in 2020, I responded completely to combination immunotherapy and am still doing well so far. Thank you to them and all the researchers at the Institute.
