La Roche-Posay, the number one skincare brand recommended by dermatologists worldwide* and world leading melanoma research organisation, Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), have embarked on a new five-year partnership. This powerful collaboration will support critical research into lifesaving melanoma treatment and accelerate awareness of sun safety.

Empowering and educating Australians on their skin health has never been more important than it is now, with one Australian losing their life to melanoma every 6 hours. Not only will this partnership help deliver vital melanoma education and awareness programmes across Australia, it also aims to increase awareness about the importance of high protection sunscreens in melanoma prevention.

“Australia’s alarming skin cancer rates demand a united front. We are so proud to stand with Melanoma Institute Australia to raise awareness on sun safety and pioneering critical research in the treatment of skin cancer,” says Alex Davison, Chief Executive Officer, L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand. ‘We believe this partnership represents a significant step forward and with La Roche-Posay’s commitment to offering life-changing dermatological skincare for all, we are committed to being part of the solution.”

Melanoma Institute Australia is a non-profit organisation dedicated to preventing and curing melanoma through innovative world-class research, treatment and education programs, with a mission of zero deaths from melanoma by 2030. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer; it is estimated 1,300 Australians will die from melanoma every year.

Matthew Browne, CEO, Melanoma Institute Australia says, “Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, with one Australian diagnosed every 30 minutes. A little-known fact is that melanoma is also the most common cancer impacting 20 to 39 year-old Australians. The State of the Nation in Melanoma report identified prevention as being a critical part of the roadmap towards reaching our goal of zero deaths from melanoma. It highlighted the need for all Australians to follow the 5 sun safe rules to protect themselves from over exposure to UV radiation. As one of the 5 sun safe rules, the use of sunscreen is a vital preventative measure and that’s why Melanoma Institute Australia is delighted to announce our exclusive sunscreen partnership with La Roche-Posay.

“Our organisations have many synergies – as global leaders in our respective fields, we are evidence-based, driven by science, and have a clear focus on reducing the burden of melanoma in our country. We also share a passion for encouraging Australians to enjoy our great outdoors, but to do it safely. This 5-year partnership will not only see our collective voices raise much-needed awareness about sun safety, and keep it top of mind for all Australians, but it will also help fuel Melanoma Institute Australia’s vital research to find new and more effective treatments to save lives from melanoma.  Treatment breakthroughs over the last decade mean that 50% of advanced melanoma patients are now effectively cured. Our research and clinical trials now focus on the remaining subset of advanced melanoma treatments who either don’t respond to, or become resistant to, these new treatments. This partnership between Melanoma Institute Australia and La Roche-Posay will provide critical funding to help underpin this world-leading research, and propel us closer to reaching our mission of zero deaths from melanoma.”

La Roche-Posay’s mission is to offer life-changing dermatological skincare for all, developing skincare solutions for common skin types to address various skin concerns and complement prescription treatments and holds long-standing expertise in UV protection research and sunscreen innovation. Globally, the dermatological skincare brand is pioneering UV filter technology and in 2022 had a major breakthrough – launching the UVMune 400 filter to protect against ultra-long UVA rays after 10 years of research.

For many years, La Roche-Posay has been committed to educating the public about the importance of sun safety and raising awareness on skin cancer, a major global public health concern. A global epidemiology study conducted by La Roche-Posay’s scientific committee shows only 30% of Australians are wearing sunscreen daily, all year round, despite the known skin cancer risk and high UV-exposure levels in Australia (2).

“This is a natural yet very crucial partnership for La Roche-Posay with science and sun safety at its heart. Together with the Melanoma Institute, we have big plans over the next five years, spanning clinical research, advancement of awareness and education programs, and provision of La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SPF50+ sunscreen range at Melanoma Institute events nationally,” says Samantha Russell, Medical Business Director, L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand.

Melanoma Institute Australia’s logo will feature on La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SPF50+ range from late 2024. The Anthelios SPF50+ sunscreen range by La Roche-Posay provides broad spectrum very high UV protection in lightweight, dermatologically tested formulas, with different products available across common skin types and designed to protect the most sensitive skin.

La Roche-Posay products are available for purchase online via www.laroche-posay.com.au and Adore Beauty, or instore at Chemist Warehouse, Priceline and other leading pharmacy retailers.
