We’re proud to announce that MIA’s Co-Medical Directors, Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO, as well as MIA Faculty members Associate Professor Alex Menzies and Associate Professor Matt Carlino, and former Faculty member Professor Rick Kefford AM, have all been named on the Clarivate list of Highly Cited Researchers 2022.

The Highly Cited Researchers 2022  list identifies researchers who have demonstrated significant influence during the last decade, as demonstrated by the production of multiple highly cited* research papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year.

The Highly Cited Researchers™ 2022 list uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify individuals from across the globe who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their chosen field or fields of research.

The preliminary list of Highly Cited Researchers is drawn from the highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science™ citation index over the past decade. The list also identifies the research institutions and regions where they are based.

The methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information™ at Clarivate.

In 2022, deeper qualitative analysis has been used to identify this year’s Highly Cited Researchers. Clarivate has partnered with Retraction Watch and extended the qualitative analysis of the Highly Cited Researchers list, addressing increasing concerns over potential misconduct (such as plagiarism, image manipulation, fake peer review). With the assistance of Retraction Watch and its unparalleled database of retractions, Clarivate analysts searched for evidence of misconduct in all publications of those on the preliminary list of Highly Cited Researchers.

*Cited is when another author or researcher refers to your research paper as evidence for, or justification of, a statement.

“Research fuels the race for knowledge and it is important that nations and institutions celebrate the individuals who drive the wheel of innovation. The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at [insert name of your institution] who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. These individuals are helping to transform human ingenuity into our world’s greatest breakthroughs – and it is an honor to celebrate their achievements.” – David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate

Some interesting facts:

  • 7,225 researcher awards from 69 countries and regions are recognized this year – 3,981 in specific fields and 3,244 for cross-field impact.
  • This year’s 7,225 Highly Cited Researcher designations are issued to 6,938 individuals. The number of awards exceeds the number of unique individuals because some researchers are receiving recognition in more than one Essential Science Indicators™ (ESI) field of research. Our analysis of countries/regions and institutions counts designations or appearances and is thus based on the total of 7,225.
  • Some extraordinary individuals are recognized in multiple ESI fields of research this year: 219 named in two fields, 28 named in three fields and 4 named in four fields.
